Cobb), and you may a scuffling actress (Evelyn Keyes) whose sis (Nina Foch) has worked on local casino and you will dated a great corrupt investigator (Jim Bannon). The brand new caustically epigrammatic software, the latest cast’s suavely managed body gestures out-of like and menace, and you may Rossen’s thrillingly restrained and fashionably cocky photos (and additionally his governmental conscience) get this pugnacious yet in depth spectacle a hidden antique of the style.” [ ten ]

While the spot follows a familiar trend, the fresh characterizations are new in addition to shows adequate so you can overbalance. Dialog is actually terse and you can relevant, preventing the sentimental, phoney touching. Unusual digital camera angles come-along occasionally so you’re able to heighten appeal and you can briefly stop the interest. Good teamplay of the Robert Rossen, increasing while the director-scripter, and you can Milton Holmes, amazing publisher and you may member producer, plus aids in rendering it a silky production.” [ 11 ]

It is mostly an issue of seeing Mr. Powell undergo his paces smartly when you find yourself a huge shed out-of stars and you will stars offer your classic support. Evelyn Keyes plays the nice absolutely nothing woman who brings about the finest in your and you will Ellen Received is the easy and you will slinky vixen whom gets him into jams. Thomas Gomez are oily since the villain and you can Lee J. Cobb really does another type of ready journey due to the fact a weary cops inspector just who in the long run shuts the truth. Significant amounts of taking and smoking is completed from the all alarmed.” [ a dozen ]
